Armenian Priests Indicted
Law-enforcement authorities have pressed charges against two priests, Bishop Mkrtich Proshian and a local parish priest, after their arrest on Wednesday.
The charges are linked to the Armenian Apostolic Church and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s efforts to depose its supreme head, Catholicos Garegin II.
- Bishop Mkrtich Proshian, the primate of the church diocese in Armenia’s central Aragatsotn province, was allowed to be held in pre-trial detention by a Yerevan court.
- The Investigative Committee claims that Proshian forced his subordinates to attend opposition rallies and interfered with their “electoral rights.”
- Proshian denies the accusations, with his lawyer, Ara Zohrabian, stating that investigators failed to provide evidence of coercion.
No evidence of alleged coercion was found.
