About one in 10 Americans will experience knee pain, swelling, and stiffness, often diagnosed as osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.
Osteoarthritis is a complex condition caused by multiple factors, including inflammation and wear and tear on the joints, leading to the erosion of the cartilage "cushion" and painful bone-on-bone contact.
Currently, there is no cure for OA of the knee, with short-term relief provided by oral pain medications, physical therapy, or steroid injections, and limited longer-term alternatives to surgery.
Risk factors for OA include age and obesity.
