A new species of mouse opossum has been discovered in the Peruvian Andes at an elevation of 2,664 meters above sea level.
The discovery was made in 2018 in the cloud forests of the region and was reported by Mongabay Latam staff writer Yvette Sierra Praeli.
The new marsupial, named Marmosa chachapoya, has a body length of 10 centimeters and a tail of 15 centimeters, with a distinctive Zorro mask-like mark around its eyes.
"I realized immediately that this was something unusual,"
said biologist Silvia Pavan, the lead author of the new species description.
The species is named after the ancient Chachapoya people who once lived in the region.
