Gun Store Owner Sentenced for Involuntary Manslaughter

A Berkeley County gun shop owner has been sentenced to 25 days in jail for the 2021 involuntary manslaughter of his employee.

Jon Whitley, owner of Coastal Firearms, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to probation with a unique condition: he must serve 5 days in jail every year for 5 years, starting from November 5.

As part of his sentence, Whitley will also be required to complete community service with an organization that supports military families who have lost a spouse.

The total jail time will be 25 days, served over the course of 5 years.

The sentence comes more than 4 years after the deadly shooting that resulted in the death of Whitley's employee, Steven Mrgan.
