Discovering Albany, New York

Recently, I visited Albany, New York, for a brief weekend trip. As I often do when visiting a city for the first time, I wandered without a plan to explore the area.

I walked along State Street, Albany's original "Main Street" and one of the city's two oldest streets. At the end of State Street, I found myself in the Empire State Plaza, where multiple government buildings are located.

The New York State Capitol

The New York State Capitol, where the state legislature gathers, is a notable building in the plaza. Completed in 1899, it's a massive structure that cost $25 million, approximately $794 million in today's currency, making it the most expensive government building of its time.

The project began in 1867 and took 32 years to complete, with three architectural teams working on its design and construction.
