A new study highlights the declining state of local news outlets in New York and the nation.
Nationally, the state of local news is depressing, according to a study by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
The country has lost nearly 3,500 newspapers and more than 270,000 newspaper jobs over the past two decades, leaving 50 million people in "news deserts," areas with limited or no access to reliable local news sources.
The study found that most closures this year affected smaller, independent owners, with weeklies being the most impacted. The number of dailies has also declined, with fewer than 1,000 remaining in the U.S. for the first time.
Author's summary: Local news outlets are declining nationwide.
