Valley Metro, the municipal bus service, is marking its 50-year anniversary with a series of events, while city officials consider changes to its management.
The city created Valley Metro on March 24, 1975, by purchasing the privately owned bus service, Roanoke City Lines. An advertisement in The Roanoke Times at the time read:
“NEW BUS SYSTEM”, inviting the community to an inaugural ceremony.
Today, Valley Metro provides over 120,000 rides monthly, at a cost of nearly $15 million annually. However, recent developments suggest that the city may be looking to hire a new manager for its bus system, potentially altering the course of Valley Metro's operations.
