Movable Bike Barrier a Good Step for Richmond Bridge
The introduction of a movable barrier on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a compromise that aims to address concerns from motorists while still providing a protected lane for bicyclists and hikers.
The barrier, which has been in place for nearly six years, will be moved to open up the third lane on most weekdays for emergency access or as a refuge for cars that break down.
Rollie Katz, general manager of the Marin Association of Public Employees, says many of his members who live in the East Bay say their commute to local jobs is taking longer.
This change is expected to alleviate some of the congestion on busy workdays, although it may not have a significant impact on weekends.
