Common Drugs Can Rewire Your Gut For Several Years, Study Finds

Our gut is home to various microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that aid in digestion, protection against harm, and communication between the digestive system and brain.

A recent study reveals that taking medications disrupts this balance, with effects still visible years later. Not only antibiotics but also other common medications cause intestinal changes.

"The effect of drug usage has been underestimated,"

a team led by genomicist Oliver Aasmets from the University of Tartu in Estonia writes. The effects of antibiotics, psycholeptics, antidepressants, proton pump inhibitors, and beta-blockers are detectable several years after use.

Author's summary: Drugs alter gut microbiome long-term.
