Why resident says intersection in Birmingham neighborhood is ‘an accident waiting to happen’

Dangerous Intersection in Birmingham Neighborhood

Families living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham describe it as risky to cross the street due to drivers ignoring stop signs.

Resident Concerns

Kimberly, a local resident, told Local 4 that the four-way stop near Woodward and West 14 Mile is “an accident waiting to happen.” Residents report that drivers often speed and fail to stop properly, endangering children and families in the area.

On-Site Observations

Local 4 visited the intersection on a weekday morning. While no speeding was observed, many drivers performed slow rolls through the stop signs rather than coming to a complete stop.

“I try to avoid this intersection if I can, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it,” Kimberly said. “We have a lot of people walking their dogs, putting their strollers, jogging and biking. People are flying through the intersection and they’re not paying any attention to people around them.”

The speed limit here is 25 mph, but many drivers exceed it.

“When I’m driving along here, most people are driving much faster than that,” said Tim, Kimberly’s husband. “I’ve been passed on Eton in the residential area doing 25. They’re very dangerous.”

Kimberly expressed her unease when crossing the street: “I’m paranoid when I have to cross here. We walk the neighborhood a lot and it scares me.”

The couple believes some modifications could improve safety in the neighborhood.
