The NHS has issued an urgent warning as health experts caution that thousands of people could die from flu this winter. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports that last winter flu deaths in England rose sharply to 7,757, compared to 3,555 the previous year. Child fatalities involving flu also increased, from 34 to 53.
Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive, emphasized the severity of the upcoming season, stating there is “no doubt” this winter will be “one of the toughest our staff have ever faced,” especially with upcoming strikes by resident doctors.
The NHS strongly encourages people to protect themselves by getting flu vaccinations before the winter season. Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, shared expert advice on the importance of vaccination.
“Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself against flu and help reduce the spread of the virus,” Claire said.
She advised those eligible for NHS flu jabs to book their appointments promptly. Those not eligible can still receive the vaccine through paid services available at Boots and other pharmacies such as Superdrug, Tesco, and Well Pharmacy. At Boots, the cost is £21.95.
Booking early is recommended to ensure timely protection during the high-risk winter period.
Summary: The NHS warns of a severe flu season with rising deaths and urges quick vaccination to protect public health and ease pressure on healthcare workers.
