A petition has been launched to overturn the ban on Tāma the Kingfisher, the Auckland FC mascot, from participating at Sky Stadium.
Tāma was banned from the mascot race scheduled for Saturday’s match day at Sky Stadium, hosted by Wellington Phoenix, ahead of the Auckland FC versus Wellington Phoenix game.
The reigning A-League minor premiers reported that Tāma is prohibited from joining the mascot race held between the men’s and women’s games.
The Auckland-based club responded by initiating an official petition to challenge this decision.
Tāma was seen protesting outside Parliament and Sky Stadium.
“To ban a kid’s mascot from a halftime mascot race is frankly some of the most egregious behaviour I have ever come across,” said an Auckland FC spokesperson. “It is why we have launched this petition and travelled to Parliament, the home of fairness and decency, to get this decision overturned.”
Brenton Vannisselroy, Wellington Phoenix head of media, explained that the mascot race includes only Wellington-based mascots, which is why Tāma was excluded.
The ban on Tāma the Kingfisher has ignited tensions between Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix, with the Auckland club actively seeking to reverse the prohibition on their mascot’s participation.
This dispute highlights how mascot participation can become a symbolic issue, reflecting broader rivalries and calls for fairness in sports events.
