Millions of Filipinos should prepare for heavy rain and strong winds as super typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) approaches the country. At a news forum on Saturday, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) deputy spokesperson June Castillo said the population in provinces exposed to Uwan is 30.8 million.
“Total population in coastal areas exposed to Typhoon Uwan… this is 1.6 million,”Castillo added.
The state weather bureau PAGASA reported at 11 a.m. that Tropical Weather Cyclone Signal No. 2 was raised over eight areas in Luzon and the Visayas as Uwan rapidly intensified.
Castillo explained that [translate: "itong exposure na pinag-uusapan natin ay kung sino, saan ang hahagipin ng hangin, at mga dalang pag-ulan ng Bagyong Uwan"] (the exposure we are talking about here is who, where the winds and rains brought by Typhoon Uwan will affect).
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) has identified over 8,000 barangays [translate: "that are also exposed and prone to rain-induced landslides and flooding"].
President Ferdinand [translate: "Bongbong"] Marcos Jr. said Saturday that all Philippine government agencies are on full alert for Uwan’s impact.
Last Thursday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) estimated that around 8.4 million Filipinos may be affected once Uwan hits. Most of these are in the Ilocos Region, with 3 million people potentially impacted.
Author's summary: Typhoon Uwan threatens 30.8 million people in the Philippines, prompting government agencies to prepare for heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding risks in thousands of vulnerable communities.
