The Cook Islands secured their place in a fourth Rugby League World Cup with a dominant 58–6 win over South Africa at CommBank Stadium. Led by Warriors star Marata Niukore, the Pacific team displayed superior skill and discipline throughout the match.
Despite South Africa fielding a side without NRL players and only a few State Cup members, they impressed early, leading 6–4. However, their hopes faded when Cook Islands prop Davvy Moale powered through three defenders to score, turning the score to 10–6 and shifting the momentum decisively.
Soon after, Esan Marsters and Niukore crossed the line within five minutes of each other before halftime. From that point, Cook Islands began to dominate possession and territory, leaving South Africa struggling to respond.
In the second half, the game became a showcase of skill from the Cook Islands. Five-eighth Cassius Cowley scored twice, while Niukore sealed his double with a powerful run through the defensive line.
Brendan Piakura delivered the highlight of the match by breaking two tackles at halfway and stepping past South Africa’s fullback to score. KL Iro added another try after a superb offload from Rua Ngatikaura and quick play from Cowley.
“And with that, Cook Islands were celebrating their fourth World Cup appearance.”
Author’s summary: The Cook Islands claimed the final Rugby League World Cup berth with a commanding 58–6 victory over South Africa, powered by stellar performances from Niukore and Cowley.
