Hungarian collector István Zelnik has agreed to return Khmer artefacts to Cambodia after years of negotiations, according to Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. The announcement highlights one of the most significant voluntary returns of cultural property in recent years, with the ministry noting that the agreement stems from long-running talks and persistent efforts to reclaim Cambodian heritage lost during decades of civil war.
“Among the significant Khmer cultural heritage objects which will be returned to Cambodia under this agreement are 183 pieces of Khmer silk textiles … as well as prehistoric artifacts such as coins, beads, jewelry, and items made of precious metals, bronze, stone and clay,” said a ministry press release. The release also noted that many items were looted during the civil war.
István Zelnik, a Hungarian national and founder of the Hungarian Southeast Asian Institute, has long collected artefacts from across Asia and supported archaeological and scientific work in Cambodia since the early 2000s. His contributions include funding LiDAR surveys and historical studies that aided Koh Ker’s UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination. The ministry confirmed that Zelnik has now agreed to return all Khmer artefacts in his possession.
The repatriated items comprise 183 silk textiles (Kei samples) and numerous other artefacts from various periods, including Pre-Angkor and Angkor eras, such as coins, beads, ornaments, and metal, stone, and ceramic pieces. Several objects are described as having been illegally taken from Cambodia during the civil war.
The Cambodian authorities emphasize that this voluntary return serves as a model for ethical stewardship of national heritage and reflects a shared commitment to preserving Cambodia’s cultural identity for future generations.
