Strengthening the Criminal Code
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to strengthen the Criminal Code with new legislation, including "reverse-onus bail" and consecutive sentencing.
The government aims to target violent and repeat offenders, specifically those accused of serious crimes such as:
- Violent auto theft
- Breaking and entering
- Human trafficking
- Violent assault
- Sexual assault
The legislation will introduce a "reverse-onus bail" for major crimes, allowing consecutive sentencing, imposing harsher penalties for organized retail theft, and restricting conditional sentences for certain sexual offences.
The Prime Minister's Office will table the legislation next week to amend the Criminal Code.
