Defenders of the Amazon Targeted in Ecuador
The Ecuadorian government is taking steps to criminalize dozens of individuals who fight to defend the Amazon forest from deforestation, according to Global Witness.
Land and environmental defenders in Latin America and the Caribbean, including indigenous peoples, are being targeted. With COP30 soon to be held in the heart of the Amazon in Brazil, this move has raised concerns.

President Daniel Noboa’s Prosecutor’s Office has launched investigations into over 60 individuals for the offense of “unjust private enrichment” and frozen many of their and their organizations' bank accounts.
