Assam Proposes Law Against Polygamy
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a proposed law against polygamy, which includes a minimum provision of seven years' imprisonment for offenders.
The bill is set to pass in the Assam Legislative Assembly on November 25th, the opening day of the next winter session.
If a person marries another woman without legally divorcing his wife, there will be a provision of seven years or more imprisonment, irrespective of his religion.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the accused cannot claim exemption based on their religion, as the government will not allow polygamy in Assam.
