Tornado Kills Six, Injures Hundreds in Brazil

A violent tornado ripped through the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on Friday night, leaving at least six people dead and over 750 injured, according to state authorities. Winds exceeding 155 miles per hour caused extensive damage across the region.

Civil defence officials reported that around 90% of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu was hit, with homes, schools, and businesses in ruins. The victims include five adults and a 14-year-old girl, while another person remains missing as rescue efforts continue.

“It destroyed everything. It destroyed the town, houses, and schools. What will become of us?” said resident Roselei Dalcandon, standing beside the rubble of her former shop.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with those affected, while his Cabinet confirmed that emergency aid has been dispatched to assist victims and rebuild essential infrastructure.

The disaster coincides with Brazil’s hosting of COP30 in Belém, where world leaders are addressing climate resilience. The storm’s impact underscores the urgent need for stronger global disaster preparedness, climate finance, and robust early-warning systems.
