A significant fire broke out Friday night at an apartment complex in Amherst, Massachusetts, resulting in the displacement of more than 200 residents. The building served as off-campus housing for many University of Massachusetts students.
The three-alarm fire destroyed the apartment complex located at 57 Olympia Drive, close to the UMass campus. In addition to this, a nearby building under construction was also lost to the blaze. Firefighters from across western Massachusetts remain on site, battling the fire.
“One four story building that was under construction has collapsed and other buildings nearby are still burning, and have partially collapsed. The fire attack has been hampered by poor water pressure in the area.”
Despite the extensive damage, Amherst town and school officials confirmed no injuries have been reported. The Olympia Place complex housed a large number of students, making this one of the most significant fires seen in the community.
“Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives,” the Amherst Fire Department said on social media.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters faced difficulties due to inadequate water pressure in the area, which slowed their efforts to contain the flames.
