Nearly one million people were evacuated days after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the country. Super Typhoon Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan, made landfall in the Philippines on Sunday, causing heavy rain and powerful winds.
The islands of Luzon and Eastern Visayas experienced the worst of the storm's initial impact. Authorities reported one person drowned and another trapped under debris during the typhoon.
More than 400 flights were canceled across the Philippines in anticipation of Super Typhoon Fung-wong’s arrival. AirAsia Philippines and AirAsia Malaysia suspended many domestic and international flights on November 9 and 10.
Passengers were advised to check flight statuses online. Those affected received notifications by text and email and were allowed to rebook flights within 30 days at no extra charge.
Over 900,000 people were evacuated in central and southeastern regions, including Catanduanes and Camarines Sur provinces. These areas were placed under a Signal 5 alert, the highest warning level in the Philippines. Metro Manila and nearby provinces were under Signal 3.
Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro urged residents to follow evacuation orders, stating, "Those who stay behind risk endangering rescue teams as well as themselves."
