Sara Cox started the demanding 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge from Kielder Forest on Monday morning. This expedition is Radio 2’s longest-ever BBC Children In Need Challenge and is expected to take five days to complete.
At the starting line, Sara, 50, was cheered on by locals and a distinctive group of supporters. A local bagpiper played for her as she began, and upon reaching Northumberland, she was greeted by alpacas.
"I'm feeling good. I'm feeling more relaxed than I have been for weeks because I've been so nervous in the buildup but now we are actually here and we're going to do it, I feel good thanks... I mean the rain is not great. There's a lot of heavy drizzle, it has paused momentarily but my toes are already soggy."
After months of intensive training, Sara set off carrying a small Pudsey Bear backpack weighing just 270 grams. Her goal is to bring Pudsey to the town of Pudsey in Leeds by Friday, symbolically carrying BBC Children In Need’s iconic mascot from the border to the heartland.
Author’s summary: Sara Cox launched a five-day, 135-mile marathon, supported by locals and alpacas, aiming to deliver Pudsey Bear from Kielder Forest to Leeds for BBC Children In Need.
