Housing Crisis in the UK

The housing crisis in the UK can only be solved by building more homes, but this requires a significant overhaul of Britain's complex planning laws.

A personal experience in March 2025 highlights the grim reality of renting in the UK. A flat in south London, shared with a friend, was found to be damp-infested and poorly furnished, with a monthly rent of over £1,000 for each tenant.

The living conditions were subpar, with

the sound of mice scuttling around in the floorboards overhead
at night. Upon requesting the deposit back at the end of the tenancy, the letting agent proposed unreasonable deductions.

Author's summary: UK housing crisis needs urgent reform.
