Shutdown Won't Impact Cleanup at J.H. Baxter Site

The federal government shutdown will not hinder cleanup operations at the former J.H. Baxter wood treatment plant in Eugene.

The plant, which closed in 2022 after nearly 80 years of operation, had been plagued by complaints of noxious odors and elevated dioxin levels in surrounding neighborhoods.

According to Alice Corcoran, an EPA Region 10 spokesperson, both time-critical removal action and Superfund site work will proceed as planned.

The EPA designated the plant a Superfund site in July, ensuring years of continued contaminant removal.
